Best video length for TikTok, Reels and Shorts

Updated · Reviewed by The Rift team

Short answer

Aim for the length your idea needs and no more. Most single-idea clips work well at 5 to 15 seconds. Platforms allow much longer: YouTube lists Shorts up to three minutes, while TikTok and Instagram change their limits, so check each app's current rules. Rift makes videos up to 15 seconds in one shot, and Spark, Rift's video agent, plans the clip to fit that.

Maximum length and best length are different questions. The maximum is a rule; the best is about attention.

What you need

Step by step

  1. Write the idea in one line, such as “my dog catches a frisbee”.
  2. Tell Spark and check the Draft for length.
  3. Tap Make for a clip up to 15 seconds.
  4. Watch it back and ask Spark to shorten it if the end drags.
  5. Post from your Library to the app you chose.

Tips

Questions people ask

What is the longest a Short can be?

YouTube's help page covers three-minute Shorts. Check the current rules before you upload.

How long can a TikTok or Reel be?

Both have grown over time. Check each app's current limit, since it changes.

Is 15 seconds too short?

For one joke, one reveal or one trend, no. It's enough time to land a single idea.

Can Rift make a longer video?

Not in the app yet. Videos are up to 15 seconds, one shot. Post two clips as two posts.
