How to make a video of your pet living a human life

Updated · Reviewed by The Rift team

Short answer

Tell Spark the life your pet is living, such as a cat who runs a bakery, then add one clear photo of your pet. Spark plans the shots, shows a Draft, and you tap Make in Rift. You get a video of up to 15 seconds with your pet in the role, ready to post. Rift is an iPhone app.

Name the human life, add one photo of your pet, and your pet keeps its own face while the world around it turns human: a cat with a morning commute, a dog who runs the front desk, a hamster who made partner.

What you need

Step by step

  1. Open Rift and tell Spark the life. One sentence: who the pet is and what they do.
  2. Add your pet’s photo. Spark uses it to keep the face and coat.
  3. Pick the moment. A video is one shot, so choose the scene that sells the joke: arriving at work, signing the paperwork, opening the champagne.
  4. Read the Draft. Spark shows the shots it plans. Change the outfit or the room by replying.
  5. Make. Tap Make, leave the app if you like, and find it in your Library when Spark says it’s ready.

Other lives to try

Give a pet a hobby (surfing, gardening), a milestone (graduation, a wedding) or an awkward pose of power (CEO chair spin). The same recipe works for a friend’s pet, a toy, or a statue in your garden.

Questions people ask

Do I need a video of my pet?

No. A photo is enough. Spark builds the scene around it.

Can the pet wear clothes and drive a car?

Yes. Say what they wear and where they are, like a suit behind the wheel of a convertible.

Can I make a whole story with several scenes?

A video is one shot of up to 15 seconds. Make several short ones and post them as a series.

Will it have text or talking?

Not in the app yet. Add text in the app you post to.

Can I use a made-up animal?

Yes. Describe it, or start from a photo of a toy or a drawing.
