How to make a video of you hugging your younger self

Updated · Reviewed by The Rift team

Short answer

Open Rift and add two photos: one of you as a child and one of you now. Tell Spark you want the older you to hug the younger you, and describe the place. Spark plans the shots and shows a Draft. Tap Make for a video up to 15 seconds. Rift is an iPhone app.

Add a photo of you now and one from childhood, and Spark sets up a hug between them. It is a video for you more than for the feed.

What you need

Step by step

  1. Open Rift and start with Spark. Describe the scene you want.
  2. Add the child photo. Tell Spark it is you at that age.
  3. Add the photo of you now. Spark now has both versions of you.
  4. Describe the moment. For example, “adult me kneels and hugs me at about six, in the old kitchen”.
  5. Check the Draft and Make. Review the plan and the price on the Make button, then tap Make. The video is saved in your Library.

Tips

Beyond yourself

The same idea works for a parent and the child they were, siblings, or a long-gone pet and you today. Whatever pair of photos you have, tell Spark how they meet.

Questions people ask

Can I use a faded childhood photo?

Yes, but restore it first if it is faded or scratched, because a clear face matters.

Can the scene be somewhere specific?

Yes. Name a place from your childhood, like a garden, a school gate or a kitchen.

Can I keep it private?

Yes. It stays in your Library until you choose to send or post it.

Can the hug last longer than 15 seconds?

No. A video is up to 15 seconds and one shot. A single, slow hug fits well.

Is it a real memory?

No. It is a made-up scene built from your photos, so present it that way when you share it.
