Can I put someone else's face in an AI video? What's okay and what isn't

Updated · Reviewed by The Rift team

Short answer

Put yourself in anything you like. Put a friend or family member in a video only when they say yes, and never use a stranger's, celebrity's or public figure's face to make them say or do something. Rift is built for you, people who agree, pets, products and characters you make. What you make is yours to post, so the call on who appears is yours too.

AI video makes it easy to put any face in any clip. That’s the fun of it, and it’s also why a few plain rules matter. These are the ones we follow at Rift, and they hold for any app.

You: anything goes

Put yourself in a dance trend, a rainforest, a painting or a dance you can’t do. It’s your face.

Friends and family: ask first

People like being in the joke when they’re in on it. A quick “can I put you in this?” saves a lot of awkward. Some easy habits:

Kids

If they’re your kids, you decide, with their privacy in mind. If they’re someone else’s, ask a parent, every time.

Strangers, celebrities and public figures: no

Don’t use a real person’s face without their OK, and never to make them say or do something they didn’t. That includes famous people. If you want a star for your page, make an original character once and use it in every video.

People who have passed away

Bringing an old family photo to life is one of the most moving things people make. Keep it with family, and check with the people who were closest to them if the memory is shared.

What Rift does on its side

When you post

Saying it’s an AI video in the post is simple and honest, and on many platforms it’s expected. It also tends to make the joke land better.

Questions people ask

Can I put my friend in a trend video?

Yes, if they agree. The easy way is to show them the Draft before you Make.

Can I use a celebrity's face?

No. Use yourself, people who agree, a pet or an original character instead.

What about a photo of my late grandparent?

Family photos are a common, loving use. Ask the people closest to them if it's a shared memory.

Does Rift learn from my videos?

Only if you say yes. Rift asks after your first video, and the answer is off until you allow it.

Can I delete what I made?

Yes. Delete videos in your Library, or delete your account and data in Profile.
